Changes to school Spelling Procedure

Change to Spelling Procedures

Spelling is a vital element of the curriculum and it is taught discretely in all classes as well as being applied through all areas of the curriculum. In Key Stage 1 spelling is an essential element of the daily phonics session and in Key stage 2 it continues to be taught in daily SPaG  (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar)  lessons.

Traditionally, spellings are issued weekly to be tested the following week, however as a school we feel that the impact of testing these spellings is minimal and the time spent in doing so would be better utilised actively teaching the children and helping them to apply their spelling learning  in context.

We have therefore decided to no longer issue and test weekly spellings. Instead we will issue word lists that children are expected to learn for the term/year. You will then have the freedom to help your child learn these at the pace that suits your child and test them yourselves if you feel this is appropriate .  In school assessment of spelling  progress will take place each long term, as part of assessment week, and will assess the spelling patterns taught in class as well as those learnt at home.

Should you have any questions about this please see your child’s class teacher.
